“The seeker for perfection must discover in his own life the reflection of the inner light.”
― Okakura Kakuzō, The Book of Tea
“Boxed Bottle” and “Boxed Olives” are a matched set of original Trompe l’œil still life paintings.
Trompe l’œil (literally “deceives the eye”) is a manner of painting that aims to be so realistic that it gives the illusion of presenting actual objects, not artistic representations of them.
In this matched set of Trompe l’œil paintings, objects are arranged in the interior of a small wooden box (in fact, an antique cheese box), and wrapped with pieces of string and twine, respectively, giving the impression of three dimensional depth on a flat surface.
The illusion of depth is continued into the frame, which presents the paintings in floating style, enclosed in custom frames made by the artist.
Each painting is done with oil on panel, and measures 15×5 inches (30×12 cm). The outer dimensions of each frame is 21×11 inches (53×28 cm).
"Boxed Bottle" and "Boxed Olives"
A Pair Of Original Still Life Paintings
Like most of my paintings, “Boxed Bottle” and “Boxed Olives” grew out of a moments of deep, quiet connection.
Like most of my paintings, “Boxed Bottle” and “Boxed Olives” grew out of a moments of deep, quiet connection.
Something about what lay before me captured my attention so completely that time came to a standstill, the outside world fell away, and I was left fully absorbed in the beauty I saw.

That moment – which is almost like a daydream – becomes the inspiration; the source from which the painting flows.

It is also the experience I hope to give the viewer – time stopping, the world and its cares falling aside, and a moment of true connection with something beautiful.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
