"Twilight Apple"

This week’s featured painting is “Twilight Apple” from 2017.  It is done with oil on gilded wood, and measures 3 x 3 inches.

This is one of my favorite formats to paint in.

It’s done on a block of shaped and beveled wood, with gold leaf applied to the edges.

The gilding aims for two things – to give the painting a jewel-like appearance, and also to point back to the art of the Middle Ages, when gold was an integral part of many works of art.

I absolutely love the artwork of that time, and try to see it whenever possible.

I’ve done quite a few paintings in this format in the past, but not for a few years. Recently a collector asked for a few of these, and in the process of making them for her, I realized how much I’ve missed doing these miniatures.
