"Etched Glass and Lemon Slice"
This week’s featured painting is “Etched Glass and Lemon Slice” from 2022. It is done with oil on panel, and measures 5 x 5 inches.
I envy those artists who can sit in front of their easel and dash off a painting in a single day.
Creating paintings the way I do it is a little more like running a factory assembly line.
These paintings are created in a series of discrete steps – each of which must be completed before moving on to the next – The composition is carefully arranged, a detailed drawing is made on the panel, a black and white underpainting is done on top of that, and then the final color layer is painted… with lots of waiting in between steps for paint to dry.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
This is a very old way of making paintings, stretching back into the Middle Ages, possibly earlier.
It produces the results I want, but it is – to say the least – laborious and time consuming. At a minimum, it takes about 6 weeks from the start of the painting to the point where it can be varnished and displayed – usually more like two months.
