"Orange, Knife, Teapot, Teacup"
This week’s featured painting is “Orange, Knife, Teapot, Teacup” from 2019. It is done with oil on linen on panel, and measures 9 x 12 inches.
My studio is nearly overflowing with collections of objects to be used in paintings. Many would call these props, but I prefer to think of them as actors in a drama.
I’ve never tried to count them, but there must be well over a thousand items available to me.
Some of these have appeared in dozens of paintings (like the knife above), and others have never been used – yet.
But they all speak to me in some way: Either there is something beautiful or visually intriguing about them, they hold some personal meaning to me, or they clearly reflect an idea I wanted to convey.
Often I’ll spend some time in the storage areas, simply setting items side by side and seeing how they interact with each other.
Many, many of these paintings have evolved from that simple act.
