Another Starring Role
As you may have gathered from my last post, I often use the same objects again and again in paintings.
It’s not for lack of choice – I probably have over a thousand items in my studio that I’ve acquired over the years just for use in my paintings (I’m not much of a collector otherwise).
It’s just that certain objects seem to express something I want to say. I’ve grown familiar with them over the years, and understand a lot about them.
It’s like a movie director that works with the same group of actors to make many different movies – and I often think of my still life props as actors in a drama.
I may have painted this ginger jar a dozen times, but I never get tired of it. There’s something joyful about the boisterous pattern – and to me it is a thing of genuine beauty.
“Plums, Lemon, Ginger Jar” is one of my newest paintings, and it is available.
The next painting in the show is a real celebration of the drama of light.
